George now playing off Handicap 9

After some overnight mist and rain the Lyme course was in excellent condition for this stableford competition in aid of the Help For Heroes charity. Although the final results are still awaited there were some excellent scores aided by the fast running freshly cut greens. In particular the ever improving George Seed, playing with the new club champion, perormed an incredible round of golf typified by a birdie putt on the last to achieve a gross 75 and 42 Stabled points. As a result George has now achieved single figures and will be playing off 9 in his next competition.
WELL DONE GEORGE.

South West Seniors Champion

Congratulations to David lock, Lyme Regis GC, for winning the SWCGA Seniors Championship on a hilly Lanhydrock course. David was not planning to play as he was recovering from a knee injury but the hero he is standing in at the last minute for John Nash who was taken ill at the Kent match and is still recovering. David had a steady 74 on the first day and a real shaky start to his second but all he was interested in was ensuring he kept a respectable card for the team competition. His 71 and 145 total was enough to tie the lead with Gloucestershire's David Potter 71 - 74, so it was down to a play off and on the first a great sand save was enough to give David the title. As can be seen in the photo David was still in total shock and thanking the Lord!

Well Done David

Club Championships

Sunday 27 June proved to be one of the hottest days of the summer so far and, with only a slight breeze blowing, fairways were extremely dry and hard with a resulting long run on the ball with greens fast and true. However, to counter the assistance given by these conditions, Head greenkeeper David Everett and his staff had devised some challenging pin positions which necessitated careful consideration of line of approach to the green on many of the holes. Played as a 36 hole event, the field, which comprised mainly the lower handicap players in the club, was well supported with a field of 49 players taking part.  As the temperature rose rapidly in the afternoon, some of the competitors found the going a little too challenging and a significant reversal of fortunes took place. However, some, particularly John Yorke and Adrian Morgan, performed consistently well to record excellent scores. Whilst Terry Peadon(15) achieved the best net score in the afternoon with a 65 he failed to feature in the prize winners. The eventual winner of the gross (Williams bowl) competition was Adrian Morgan (5) with a second round score of 76 which, combined with his first round gross of 71, gave him a total of 147. However, victory was only achieved over second placed Scott Love (1) through an excellent birdie on the final 18th hole. Scott, still only a junior player, was one shot behind with a gross of 148 achieved through a 76 in the morning and a one over par 72 in the afternoon. Also with a total of 148 was Jolyon Bugg whose gross of 78 in the afternoon put him in third place. In the net competition the result was a little more conclusive with John Yorke (6) scoring net rounds of 70 and 65 to run out the winnner by 3 shots over Gregg Matthews (5) with a total of 138. In third place with 139 was Junior player Johnny Ebdon (8).

Winter Programme

Mr David Everett reports that all work has been completed on the winter programme with the new bunker up the 2nd fairway. The existing bunker has been kept but reduced in size.

The other bunkers have been constructed down the right side of the 6th fairway.

This will tighten up the course for the low handicap player but not make it too difficult for the higher handicap players.

Narrow Banding a Success

Waterlogged putting green and puddle free 18th green

The narrow banding has been a great success!  The greens that have been treated are now draining very quickly and are generally puddle free. During a recent deluge those cowering in the clubhouse could see a water free 18th green (see photo) and a completely waterlogged practice putting green.

And David Everett has recovered from the trauma he experienced when he saw the contractors working on his precious greens. The lines are fading rapidly and the local rule allowing you to move your ball is likely to be rescinded very soon.

It was worth it in the end!
